2022 LEAGUE CHAMPS
PROVIDENT HOMES WINS THEIR 3RD SUMMER CCHL CUP
ASTON, P.A. – Provident Homes defeats Assurance Media 4-3 on Thursday evening in triple overtime to win the 2022 Summer Corey Cup Hockey League trophy.
BOXSCORE
Matt Dougherty (2G), Mike Davis and Albert Washco had goals for the defending summer champs. Nick Martino, Marcus Dickerson, and Rocco Carzo had goals for Assurance Media (4th seed). Mike Rice of Assurance Media had 59 saves on 63 shots, most notably his two-pad stack on Washco. Playoff MVP goaltender Kyle Pantalone was the hero for Provident Homes (3rd seed), stopping 66 shots and numerous key saves in overtime.
Assurance Media Nick Martino scored the first goal of the game at 1:37 of the first period, with a pretty tic-tac-toe passing play from Marcus Dickerson and Rocco Carzo. Blue kept the pressure on Yellow, but Pantalone kept the score 1-0 until the 13:01 minute mark when Albert Washco scored his lone goal of the evening. Wascho blocked a shot from the point and hustled down the ice solo and to even the game at 1. Less than 20 seconds later, Dougherty knocked down a cross ice pass and fired a shot by an unexpecting Rice giving Provident a 2-1 lead.
Assurance Media did not give up, and they evened the sides at two during the 2nd period when Marcus Dickerson scored his only goal of the night, assists going to Carzo and Ryan Devine. Then a few minutes later, Ben Bauer found a streaking Carzo heading to the net who tipped in his sole goal of the evening from Bauer’s shot from the point. Devine picked up his second apple of the game. The momentum was swinging in blue’s direction, but Mike Davis brought Provident Homes back to life after he scored a breakaway tally with only 17 seconds remaining in the 2nd period. Assists going to Zac Lazzaro and Brett Turner.
No goals were scored in the 3rd, but plenty of saves were made by Rice and Pantalone. With the game tied 3-3, the boys headed into what ended up being the first of three 10-minute 5 X 5 overtimes.
The legs were heavy, the lungs were burning, the pressure was on, teams blocking shots, battling hard, but neither team was successful in finding twine during the first OT. Keeping the same format, the boys dug a little deeper into the tank trying to find a way to end the contest but once again, Pantalone and Rice made huge saves during the entire 2nd OT.
Finally, after 45 minutes of regular play and 26:41 minutes of overtime play, Matt Dougherty scored his second of the night at 6:41 of triple overtime. The winger poked a bouncing puck off a neutral zone faceoff draw by the Assurance Media defender and skated in alone on Rice and buried the game winner on playoff MVP runner up Mike Rice. I do not know who was most excited; the wives of players with kids past bedtime, the team who won the league, or C league players whose games were pushed back an hour.
Mr. Pantalone was in attendance for his son’s game and said afterward, “that was one of the best games I’ve watched in four years. Both teams played well defensively, blocked shots, sticks in lanes, crisp passing, it really was fun to watch.” Well said sir.
As the boys from both teams rehydrated in the rink Pub, here’s a couple responses from the guys. “Just a fun game to play”. “Haven’t played that type of serious hockey in years”. “Could have gone either way”. “What a battle”. “Felt like a true hockey game”. “Goalies were amazing”. “Best men’s league game I’ve ever played”. And what was most common, “I am going to be VERY sore in the morning!"
As League Commissioner, I would like to thank everyone who played this year, especially to the team captains Mike Cauley, Kenny Trentowski and Antonio Baccari. I could not run the league without your support. You guys make teams and recruit players, manage the squads, and hold the guys accountable. Without your help, I could not keep the league going. Thank you!
Many thanks to the head of officiating, Bill Crawford. Your ability to provide grade A refs, commitment, and enthusiasm for the CCHL are truly appreciated. Many thanks to the head of scorekeeping, Alex Clark. Alex did a remarkable job keeping track of the players and stats and is the Pointstreak man behind the scenes. Like the captains, you two take a lot of stress off my shoulders. Thank You!
Special shout out to Sean Monaghan of Shirt Talkin, the “you gotta win em’ to wear em” championship black with black mesh snapbacks are perfect for hot days! Thanks again Sean for taking care of the boys!
Good Luck to all Junior, College, and Professional players in the upcoming season. Stay healthy, and I will see you next summer. Those players in the real world, enjoy the remainder of summer, and the winter season will start in October.
