PROVIDENT HOMES
WINTER
2018 - 2019
CHAMPIONS!
Wilmington, DE. – The #1 ranked Assurance Media hockey team fell to #2 Provident Homes on Friday evening at The Skating Club of Wilmington. Thanks to some spectacular goaltending by Mike Amoroso, it meant a fourth straight win as Provident Homes earned an 8-2 victory over Assurance Media to sweep the best of three playoff series. Amoroso turned away 43 of 45 shots and earned 1st star of the game. 2nd star Matt Riley (2G,2A), and third star Dave Martin (3G) helped lead Provident Homes to their 2nd CCHL Winter title in three years.
Provident Homes hopped on the board midway thru the first period as Dave Martin scored his 1st of the evening at 8:15 with assists from Matt Riley and Dan Corey. A scramble in front of the net, and Martin grabbed the loose puck and found twine. Provident Homes and Martin continued its offensive surge in the first period with Martin scoring his 2nd goal of the night at 12:43 of the period, assists coming Matt Zeeman and Kevin Redmond. Provident stretched their lead to 3-0 with the eventual game winner charted by Matt Riley at 13:20 of the first period. Kyle Reeds and Kevin Redmond earned the assists.
In the second period, Provident rattled off two more unanswered goals to take a 5-0 lead. The fireworks started with Matt Riley’s unassisted 2nd goal of the game, at 10:00 of the period, a hard-working solo effort on his part. Riley and Assurance Media goaltender Mike Rice were in a foot race for a loose puck. Rice got to the puck first, however his clearing attempt was blocked by Riley’s shin pad. Riley buried his 2nd of the night into the empty net. A little more than four minutes later, Kevin Redmond fresh from his two minutes in the “Sin Bin”, came streaking out of the penalty box. Riley earned his fourth point of the night by finding the open man. Redmond skated into the offensive zone alone on Rice snapping a shot past him, giving the yellow team a commanding 5-0 lead. Casey Rogers was credited with an assist, his third point of the playoffs.
Provident Homes captain Jeff Corey lit the lamp at 1:42 into the third period, Kyle Reeds picking up the helper. Although down a man, Reeds and Corey found themselves skating into the offensive zone on a two on one, with Reeds threading a needle near the top of the circles, and Corey shooting over a sprawling goaltender. Three minutes later, Jeff Corey found Martin flying up the wing, and Martin scored his 3rd goal of the game. To date, Dave Martin is the first person in CCHL history to record a hat trick in a CCHL championship game.
Assurance Media finally broke the shutout at 12:28 of the third period with a goal by Chris Zizza. While battling two yellow defenders in front, Zizza somehow found time fire a quick shot past the yellow goaltender. Not long after the goal, Kyle Reeds received a “no look” feed by Dan Corey, his second assist on the night, and Reeds found himself alone on Rice. Reeds who led Provident Homes in playoff points (5G, 5A) fired a shot above the right pad and secured the victory for the yellow squad. Assurance Media had some fight left in them and added one more goal in the third as Mike Cenisio ripped a shot from the top of the circle, beating Amoroso cleanly.
On the night, Assurance Media outshot Provident Homes 45-36. Assurance Media was 0-4 on the power play and Provident Homes was perfect on the penalty kill at 4-4, including a shorthanded tally.
Mike Amoroso received playoff MVP, boasting a 1.75 GAA average and .956 save percentage in four games. “We had that belief right from the start,” said Amoroso, who added his name to the record books by posting a shutout in a CCHL playoff game. In fact, Amoroso had two shutouts in four contests. “The entire playoffs we were playing solid hockey,” Amoroso added. “We played team hockey, guys were backchecking, blocking shots, clearing rebounds. We stuck together and everyone chipped in. That’s the way to win.”
As League Commissioner, I would like to thank everyone who played this year, especially to the team captains (Mike Cauley, Matt Riley, Kenny Trentowski, Nick Dellaquila, and Dan Shirilla). As always, thanks for helping me to keep the league as the top men’s league in the area.
Special shout out to Sean Monaghan of Shirt Talkin, the championship “You gotta win em’ to wear em’” winter lids are sweet! Mike Lane did not want to mess up his hair for the post-game interview.
Special shout out to our officiating crew of Sean Greene, Brian Valentine, the other fill ins, and our scorekeeper, Alex Clark, you guys did an outstanding job this year, thanks again for everything.
I wish a healthy spring & summer to everyone, and I hope to see everyone back next winter!
