Provident Homes repeats as 2021 Summer League Champs!!
Aston, PA – Austin Master and Mike Davis each scored a CCHL hat trick, and Provident Homes won the 2021 Corey Cup by defeating Assurance Media by a score of 10-5 at Ice Works Skating Complex on Thursday evening. It was the most goals by a team in a championship game since the CCHL originated in 2013, and we broke league attendance records with 59 people in the stands.
Box Score
Albert Wascho, Jarrett Rush, and Jeff Corey each had a goal, but the bulk of their offensive production came from their top line of Austin Master (3G, 1A), Mike Davis (3G, 2A), and Nick Master (1G, 3A). These guys certainly did not disappoint the fans with some fancy plays and shots, and Anthony Pupplo stood tall in the net turning away 45 shots for the win. Assurance Media goaltender Mike Rice played well making 40 saves on 50 shots.
Davis scored less than a minute into the first period to give Provident Homes the early lead, but Matt Tendler scored 2 minutes later to even the game at 1-1. However, they say the shift after a goal is a big one and Davis scored his second of the night 34 seconds after the goal by Tends to put the yellow team back on top. This line was feeling it and less than a minute later Austin Master scored his first of three giving Provident Homes the 3-1 lead. John Mortimer of Assurance Media cut the lead by one scoring his first of the evening, but Albert Washco capitalized on an Assurance Media turnover with his lone goal of the evening giving Provident Homes the 4-2 lead to end the first.
Provident Homes scored four unanswered goals in the second with Jeff Corey, Mike Davis, Nick Master and Austin Master each finding the net giving the boys a commanding 8-2 lead over the blue team. Janko Mamrilla of Assurance Media scored a power play goal to end the period making the game 8-3.
The third period saw two goals per side, with Austin Master, Jarrett Rush of Provident Homes finding twine, and Marcus Dickerson and Doug Rose scoring for Assurance Media.
"We were feeling good about tonight, but they capitalized on their opportunities, and we didn’t. All in all, it was a fun league and good game”, said Matt Tendler. Assurance Media captain Mike Cauley said afterwards; “That’s the beauty of this league with all teams being equal, it really comes down to who gets the bounces and capitalizes on the other teams’ mistakes. Obviously, tonight was not our night”.
"We knew inside the locker room that we had what it takes to win, and we kept talking about it, kept believing, and we’re pumped with the end result," Garrett Gallagher said. Gallagher, by the way, earned defensive player of the evening with 7 block shots, including one off the dome.
As League Commissioner, I would like to thank everyone who played this year, especially to the team captains (Antonio Baccari, Kenny Trentowski, and Mike Cauley). As always, thanks for helping me to keep the league as the top men’s league in the area.
Special shout out to Sean Monaghan of Shirt Talkin, the You gotta win em’ to wear em” championship lids are snazzy. Thanks again Sean for hooking the boys hook!
Special shout out to our scorekeeper Alex Clark and officiating crew of Sean Greene, Brian Valentine, Keith Preston, and Tom Dellafranco. You guys did an outstanding job this year, thanks again for everything.
For those players who are off to junior, college, and pro; work hard and enjoy the ride. I hope you have a healthy season and I look forward to catching up next summer!
For those with the 9-5, I will see you this winter.
