WINTER 2016 /2017 CHAMPIONS
PROVIDENT HOMES
Wilmington, Delaware – Ryan Sterrett, Zach Bedwell, and Matt Bedwell scored goals to lead the 2nd place Provident Homes team to a 4-1 CCHL Winter Championship victory over the 1st place Flo Mechanical on Thursday Night. Provident Homes won the best of series 2-1.
After a scoreless first period, Provident Homes jumped to a 1-0 lead with less than 5 minutes to go in the second period by capitalizing on a short handed tally by Sterrett. Tim Nakajima was credited with the sole helper by making a crisp pass to Sterrett on the 2 x 1. Flo Mechanical did their best to crawl back into the game with constant pressure and firing shots on goal from everywhere, but goaltender Nick Matarese was a brick wall out there and kept them scoreless thru two.
Mid-way thru the 3rd period, Zach Bedwell, fresh off a line change, charged down the right-hand side of the ice and fired a clapper on net just as he crossed the blue line. Flo Mechanical goaltender Ryan Klingensmith was screened by Danny Corey on his center lane drive and lost sight of the puck, Provident Homes went up 2-0.
A few moments later, Matt Bedwell fired a wrist shot on net putting Provident up 3-0. “That puck was deflected” said Klingensmith, “I wish I could have had that bounce back.” Less than 3 minutes later Matt Bedwell cashed in on his second of the night. Danny Corey and Blake Mitchell were credited with the assist. “What a night the Bedwell’s and DFC had, scored some huge goals, our grinder line was easily our best line” said Jeff Corey.
With one second remaining in the game, Eric Breeden fired a shot from the point that managed to found twine, closing the door on the possible shut out for Matarese. “That one hurts” said Matt Weindel, “motts played a hell of a game, I wish we could have helped him keep the goose egg.”
“The win felt great. The boys played very well. We did not have much success against them during the regular season, losing all but one game. They came out firing on all cylinders and we weathered the storm. They do not give up many odd man rushes and we got lucky while shorthanded, Timmy made a great play on that 2-1 to Ryan. I told our boys for us to win; we need to keep a 3rd guy high, tighten up the back end as their team has too many high-end goal scorers and we simply can not run and gun with their team,” said team captain Jeff Corey.
“I thought we played well,” said team Captain Matt Riley after the loss. “We definitely wanted to hoist the cup this year and I believe my men battled hard. Yellow played a real hockey game, always had 3 guys back, the bounces just did not go our way. We battled and did our best, that’s all that matters”.
This marks the end of the 2016-2017 winter league, huge congrats to the boys on Provident Homes for winning the Corey Cup this season.
Many thanks to each player, I hope you enjoyed the winter season, and I hope to see you all back in 7 months.
Special shout out to team captains Matt Riley (Flo Mechanical), Nick Dellaquila (Jewelry Exchange of Delaware), Mike Cauley and Matt Zeeman (Hy-Point Dairy), greatly appreciate everything you’ve done for your team and league.
Enjoy the upcoming spring and the warm weather boys!
