JEWELRY EXCHANGE OF DELAWARE
WINTER 2017 - 2018
CHAMPIONS!

Picture
On Thursday, #1 seed Jewelry Exchange of Delaware and #2 seed Provident Homes took the ice for their final game of the best of three championship series, each team hungry for the CCHL 2017-2018 Winter Corey Cup. The game quickly broke out in Provident Home’s favor as they notched the game’s first goal off the efforts of Jeff Corey (Sam House) less than a minute into the game. Jewelry Exchange of Delaware quickly answered the bell with a tying goal 20 seconds later by defenseman Danylo Guryev (Sean Monaghan, Terry Ciesielka).

Both teams peppered their opposing goalies looking for that next goal, and ten minutes later, John Dennis (Ryan Gannon and Ken Davis) found a small hole and put the red team up 2-1.  Provident Homes went on the attack trying to tie the game but got caught with all players in the offensive zone. Nick Dellaquila found a cherry-picking Sean Monaghan who went down on the breakaway and gave Jewelry Exchange of Delaware the 3-1 lead.

In the second, both teams put the pedal to metal on the attack, as the teams combined for 31 shots in the middle frame. Jewelry Exchange of Delaware padded its lead mid-way thru the period when Danylo Guryev (Dave Orlando and Tom Welch) scored his second of the night. This was the only goal in the second.

Around mid-way into the third, John Dennis (Ken Davis, Dan Shirilla) potted his second of the night. Little did he know, his second goal of the night would eventually become the game winner despite giving his team a 5 -1 lead at the time.  With a 5-1 commanding lead, it appears all was lost for Provident Homes, but they would not go quietly in the night, picking up three late period goals from Ryan Sterrett (Jeff Corey, Casey Rodgers), and two goals but Leo Skehan (Ryan Sterrett, Sam House) and Leo Skehan (Sam House, Ryan Sterrett). These goals quickly bridged the gap and left two and half minutes of available ice time to tie the game and send it into overtime.

With their goalie pulled, Provident Homes fired every shot imaginable on goaltender Mike Rice, but it was not enough, and the game ended 5-4 in Jewelry Exchange of Delaware’s favor.  The championship was long overdue for Nick Dellaquila, and well deserved!!

As League Commissioner, I would like to thank everyone who played this year, especially to the team captains (Nick Dellaquila, Matt Riley, and Mike Cauley).  As always, thanks for helping me to keep the league as the top men’s league in the area.

Special shout out to Sean Monaghan of Shirt Talkin, the championship lids are sweeeeet!! I won’t lie, I’m pretty pissed we lost as “You gotta win em’ to wear em’”

Special shout out to our officiating crew of Sean Greene, Brian Valentine, the other fill ins, and our scorekeeper, Alex Clark, you guys did an outstanding job this year, thanks again for everything.

I am a glutton for punishment, the summer league is less than 3 weeks away!
