CCHL 2023 WINTER CHAMPS
ASSURANCE MEDIA WINS THE COREY CUP
ASTON, P.A. – Assurance Media won the 2023 Winter Corey Cup Hockey League after a 6-4 victory over Buckley’s Tavern on Thursday night at Ice Works Arena.
BOXSCORE
It took 8 minutes into the game for Assurance Media to get on the board as Matt Sutherland backhanded the puck over the glove of Jacob Snyder. Mike Cauley found Sutherland with a cross-ice feed near the red line, allowing the winger to sneak into the zone and score the first of the game. The first period would end 1-0.
Assurance Media added to their lead with three consecutive goals. Fresh out of the hospital and fueled by steroids, Anthony Pino received a pass from Cauley and scored his first of the night with a little razzle dazzle stickhandling through the defenders making it 2-0. Four minutes later, Janko Mamrilla buried a juicy rebound off a Mike Lassik bomb from the point. Whatever steroids Pino was given, please pass them my way this summer. A great individual effort beating the D man wide and sliding a puck through Snyder’s legs gave the blue guys a 4-0 lead. Buckley’s Tavern finally got on the board with a nice wrist shot by Dalton Bew on goaltender Mike Rice. Assists going to the Dougherty brothers. Pino and Bew would eventually have two on the night, no big deal. The second period ended 4-1.
Buckley’s Tavern tried clawing their way back with a 3rd period goal by Colin Emerich. A sweet dish by Connor Lloyd. However, it did not take long for Assurance Media to pad to their lead with a backdoor tap in goal by Dave Taylor. Assist going to Pino and Sutherland. Armen Asdourian finished the scoring for Assurance Media after picking up a rebound from a blistering Chris Zizza shot. Zizza, fresh off the IR, was flying during the playoffs. With less than 8 minutes remaining, Buckley’s Tavern did their best to even the score. They had two goals by Richie Brusco and Dalton Bew, but Rice did not allow them to even the score. Game MVP in my opinion goes to Rice for remaining poised and standing tall all night.
Pino on continuing to regain his scoring touch:
"I think just getting opportunities to put myself in positions to get pucks, shooting the puck more. I'm a volume shooter, so I think getting more shots gives you a better opportunity to put more pucks in the net. I think just continuing to have that mindset of shooting the puck."
Captain Mike Cauley on the win:
"We try and focus on our daily process. We just want to be the best we can be on that day and take care of that day's business. I think by having that type of mindset, you don't spend a lot of energy worrying about things beyond your control. You worry about what is in your control. Tonight, our job or task was to get a win and once again secure our names on the Corey Cup trophy."
Cauley on getting Zizza back in the lineup:
"He had some lingering stuff that was bugging him, and he's had good numbers versus Buckley’s Tavern over the years. I just thought when he came up to me Monday and said, I'm in, I was quite pleased. Sometimes, when you play as hard as he does ... you accrue some bumps and bruises during a long grind of an 11 - game schedule. In the end, he played today and was a big factor in our win."
As League Commissioner, I would like to thank everyone who played this year, especially to the team captains Mike Cauley, Kenny Trentowski and Antonio Baccari. I could not run the league without your support. You guys manage the squads and hold the guys accountable. Without your help, I could not keep the league going. Thank you!
Many thanks to the head of officiating, Bill Crawford. I love the appreciation and enthusiasm, simply first-class buddy! Many thanks to the head of scorekeeping, Alex Clark. Alex did a remarkable job keeping track of the players and stats and is the Pointstreak man behind the scenes. Like the captains, you two take a lot of stress off my shoulders. Thank You!
Special shout out to Sean Monaghan of Shirt Talkin, the “you gotta win em’ to wear em” championship blue and red tuques are baller! Thanks again Sean for taking care of the boys!
There’s only 48 days remaining to hit the cardio and gym. CCHL Summer League starts May 18th.
Commish.
