2024 Summer Champs

Picture
Aston, PA.  Greenhill Car Wash won the  2024 CCHL Summer Championship  for a second straight season by defeating the Safegard Group last night by a score of 5-2.

BOXSCORE

Goals coming from five different Green Car Wash players; Vinny Starzi, Chris Bournazos, TJ Avellino (GW), Anthony Starzi, and Mark Petaccio.  The Safegard Group goal scorers were Jack Torr and Matt King.

The legs were burning after the first shift as both teams came out buzzing, putting a lot of pressure on goaltenders Ronnie Petrucci and Brendahn Brawley. Petrucci ended the game with 32 saves, and Brawley earned his playoff MVP stopping 36 of the 38 shots against. Special shout out to Brawley who set a franchise and league first playoff shutout on Monday night when Greenhill Car Wash beat J & K Trash Removal 2-0 in the semi-final game. Brawley is the unanimous playoff MVP choice among the captains.

Greenhill Car Wash tallied the first and only goal in the 1st period.  After some serious O-zone pressure on the yellow squad and a few corner cycles and give and go’s, Brock Weimer found an open Vinny Starzi in the slot who buried his wrist shot. Liam McCanney picked up the other assist.

Less than a minute into the second period, The Safegard Group found themselves down a man. Chris Bournazos found twine with the only power play goal of the game. His shot was under the bar glove side on Petrucci.   Just one minute later, TJ Avellino buried a rebound goal off a Brett Skalski shot. The boys in black are up 3-0.

Finally, after 21 minutes into the game, sixteen-year-old Jack Torr beat Brawley with a hard shot from the slot over Brawley’s right pad giving The Safegard Group their first goal of the game. Assists going to Matt King and Tommy Weekes. About a minute later, King found the back of a net with a shot from the right-hand side that beat Brawley five hole.  Assist going to Eric Breedon.  The second period ended 3 – 2 in favor of Greenhill.

Anthony Starzi scored 11 minutes into the 3rd period with a hard shot immediately off a face win by Brock Weimer in the offensive zone. This goal crushed the yellow team and took the wind out of their sails.  Mark Petaccio sealed the deal with a breakaway goal with 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd period. Assist going to wily veteran John Dennis. With no other goals scored, Greenhill wins the game with a final score of 5-2 and hoists the Corey Cup for a second straight season. Congratulations guys!

Couple quotes from two highly respected coaches in the area, Mr. Al Washco, and Mr. Bill Swahl. “That was really fun to watch. Lot of young guys out there buzzing around. The game was fast paced. Lot of skill out there. How many players are not legally allowed to drink? Game was evenly matched, and much closer than the final score”.

As League Commissioner, I could not be happier with the results and parity this season. We finished the regular season with two 9-5 teams, two 5-9 teams, and one 7-7 team. I have no doubt in my mind that you will not find a men’s league with this sort of talent and parity elsewhere. When we started this league 11 years ago, the main goal was to have fun, play competitive hockey with early ice times, but to make sure any team can win on any given night.  I say it every year, but I think this summer was the best to date. Therefore, I could not thank you all for your efforts this season.

As in the past, I want to personally thank the team captains Mike Cauley, Kenny Trentowski, Antonio Baccari, and Jeremy Synder.  I could not run the league without your support. You guys help recruit players and manage the squads. Without your help, I could not keep the league going. Thank you!

Many thanks to the head of officiating, Bill Crawford. Your enthusiasm and commitment for the CCHL are admired and appreciated.  Also, many thanks to Robbie Hennessey for keeping Wild Bill in line. Many thanks to the head of scorekeeping, Alex Clark. Alex did a remarkable job keeping track of the players and stats and is the Pointstreak man behind the scenes.  Like the captains, you three take a lot of stress off my shoulders. Thank You!

Special shout out to Sean Monaghan of Shirt Talkin, the “you gotta win em’ to wear em” championship gray “worn” lids. Thanks again Sean for taking care of the boys!

Good Luck to all Junior, College, and Professional players in the upcoming season. Stay healthy, and I will see you next summer. Those players in the real world, enjoy the remainder of summer, and the winter season (hopefully) will start in October.
